What is ear wax removal?
Ear wax removal, also known as cerumen management, is the process of safely and effectively cleaning out the ear canal to remove excess or impacted ear wax (cerumen). While ear wax serves a protective function by trapping dust, debris, and potentially harmful microorganisms, excessive accumulation or impacted ear wax can lead to discomfort, hearing problems, and even temporary hearing loss.
Prior to your appointment, you will need to soften the wax in your ears to make it easier for removal. Please only use an olive-oil based product to do so, such as Earol (Extra Virgin olive oil in the kitchen also works well!). We recommend doing this at least 3 days beforehand.
We practice two methods of ear wax removal:
Microsuction – involves the use of a specialised medical suction device and a binocular microscope to carefully and precisely remove the ear wax
Water Irrigation – this method involves gently flushing warm water into the ear canal to soften and dislodge the wax, which is then carried out of the ear along with the water
Prior to looking in your ears, we will take your history to ensure the correct procedure is used to safely and effectively remove the wax.
How do I know if I have wax in my ears?
You may not always know if you have wax in your ears. However, if you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, we advise on making an appointment for us to check:
- Hearing Loss: Once of the most noticeable symptoms of compacted wax is a gradual or sudden reduction in hearing. The wax can block sound waves from reaching the eardrum, leading to muffled or reduced hearing
- Ear fullness of pressure: Impacted wax can create a sensation of fullness, pressure, or blockage in the ear. It might feel like something is stuck in your ear, and you may have an urge to constantly clear your ear.
- Earache or pain: In some cases, compacted ear wax can cause discomfort or mild pain in the affected ear
- Tinnitus: Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, or other phantom sounds in the ears. Impacted ear wax can sometimes contribute to or exacerbate tinnitus symptoms
- Dizziness of vertigo: In rare cases, compacted ear wax can disrupt the balance mechanisms in the inner ear, leading to feelings of dizziness or vertigo
- Itching or irritation: The presence of compacted wax might cause itching or irritation in the ear canal.
- Coughing
- Discharge or odor
- Difficulty with earphones or hearing aids: if you use either of these, the presence of compacted ear wax can interfere with their proper placement and functioning
What are the benefits of ear wax removal?
- Improved Hearing – a build-up of ear wax can block the ear canal, leading to muffled or reduced hearing. Removing it can restore normal hearing and improve sound clarity.
- Prevention of ear infections – When ear wax builds up and becomes impacted, it can create a favorable environment for bacterial or fungal growth, potentially leading to ear infections. Regular ear wax removal reduces the risk of such infections.
- Relief from discomfort: Impacted ear wax can cause sensations of fullness, pressure, or even pain in the ear. Removing the wax can alleviate these uncomfortable symptoms.

- Enhanced eardrum health: Excess ear wax can push against the eardrum, potentially causing irritation, damage, or inflammation. Removing the wax can help maintain the health and integrity of the ear drum
